THE LIMBIC SYSTEM

Let go of suppressed emotions | Anchor positive emotions

Essential oils are incredibly effective to help diffuse and let go of suppressed emotions as well as anchor positive emotions. Essential oils impact your emotions tied to memories, thanks to activation of your limbic system.

Essential oils and the brain.jpg

The limbic system is the portion of the brain that deals with three key functions: processing emotions, memories and arousal (or stimulation). It is also responsible for all human behaviour, all decision-making, and has no capacity for language (is completely separate to the analytical mind).

On top of that, the limbic system processes information 200 times faster than the cognitive brain.

Essential oils have the ability to pass through the blood brain barrier and stimulate the brain. Their effect is very quick and can result in the relief of pain, stress, promote sleep and improve mood.

“When choosing essential oils, it's important to do your research and make sure you're getting therapeutic-grade oils that are made using the purest ingredients.”

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Inhalation

Essential Oil Diffuser.jpg

There are many methods of enhancing the inhalation of essential oils:

  • Diffuser: Add a few drops to an essential oil diffuser (with water). This is a good way to subtly disperse oils so that their scent can fill a room with the oil's natural fragrance. e.g. diffuse lavender if you want to enhance relaxation before bed.

  • Dry evaporation: A few drops of oil are placed on a  tissue or cotton ball and allowed to evaporate into the air. If you want a stronger dose you can smell the tissue or cotton ball. If a milder, more constant exposure is desired, simply keep the tissue or cotton ball near you e.g. in the car, in your handbag or at your desk.

  • Hands: Rubbing a few drops into your hands and taking a few deep breaths

  • Steam:  A couple of drops of essential oil are added to a bowl of steaming water. Place a towel over your head and breathe deeply. This method is very direct and potent. It is important keep the eyes closed when using this method. Nb. This is not recommended for children younger than 7 years old. Children older than 7 can use swimming goggles to protect their eyes.

Directly on to the skin

It is important to note that most essential oils cannot be applied directly to the skin without being diluted. As a rule of thumb, essential oils should be diluted in a carrier substance (e.g. liquid coconut oil) at no greater concentration than 3-5%.

For massage or for application over large areas of the body, a 1% solution (meaning, one drop of essential oil in one teaspoon of carrier) is generally a safe concentration. For infants, using a 0.25% solution is recommended (.5% for toddlers).

  • Topical application: This is a a fast and effective method as the oils will permeate your skin and not only will you smell them through your olfactory nerve, but they’ll also enter your bloodstream more quickly. These can be applied to a specific part of the body, such as pulse points, forehead, neck, chest, soles of feet.

  • Spray: Creating a spray to spritz into the air or on your pillow e.g. an aqueous solution of pine or citrus oils to enhance holiday feelings or a solution of peppermint oil to stimulate alertness.
